It is possible, and important, to avoid back injury in the workplace. We want to help you do that. Below are some things you can do to keep a healthy, injury free, back.
  1. Learn about your back. The back is composed of bones, discs, joints, nerves, etc...each part has an important role in keeping you fully functional. The many complex parts, of your back, are susceptible to injury too. The more you understand how your back works, the more you can do to prevent injury to it.
  2. Understand your back pain. If injured (even slightly) you may experience short-term or long-term pain. Pain that subsides after a few week (often with at-home remedies) is considered short-term. However, pain that goes on for several months, if left untreated, could cause permanent disability. If you experience pain for two or three weeks, you should seek medical attention. We also suggest that, immediately following any injury you seek care.
  3. Keep your back healthy. Keeping a healthy back can be accomplished through proper stretching, an active lifestyle, increasing your core strength, etc...Remember that every part of your body contributes to keeping your back healthy.
  4. Practice safe habits at work. Poor posture, overexertion, repetitive motion, and fatigue, each increase the likelihood of you being injured at work. Listen to your body and follow protocol (ex. lifting an item with two people instead of one), when at work, to decrease your injury risk.
OSHA offers an in depth guide, based upon the Kansas State University's Research & Extension, for protecting your back HERE. Even if you use the above tips your back may still become injured, through no fault of your own. If you suffer back injury don't hesitate to call Attorney T. Morton @ 913.602.7288.
