Following your accident there are a number of reasons you may need the report from your Kansas City car accident. Those reasons range from needing the report to file a claim for compensation with your insurance agency to needing it for filing a personal injury complaint. If you didn't get the report at the car accident site, and the crash was handled by the Kansas Highway Patrol, here are our tips for getting it after the fact:
  • STEP ONE - Get your Kansas Highway Patrol car accident number. If requested within 30 days of the accident, you can find it HERE. You can search the accident log by the date, county and type of crash.
  • STEP TWO - Before you begin you will need to create a KanAccess username password and have the  accident information (ex. name, case number, date, etc...).
  • STEP THREE - Read and agree to the KSA 45-230 terms and conditions.
  • STEP FOUR - Pay for and download the report through KanAccess. This access will allow you to also request witness statements.

If the accident occurred after May 2013 you can request the report HERE. For reports before May 2013 you will request the report in writing from the Kansas Highway Patrol General Headquarters  Records office (708 SW Jackson, Topeka, KS 66603). If you prefer to make a request in person, you may make the request at the headquarters address noted above.

For the most part, requesting your report through other law enforcement offices is the same as those mentioned above. If your accident was handled by another entity (such as the local police) you will make your crash report request directly from it. Here are few agencies you might use:
  • Kansas City, Kansas Police Department accident reports can be requested HERE, or in person in the police lobby (700 Minnesota Ave, Kansas City, KS 66101).
  • Kansas Turnpike accidents are handled by the Kansas Turnpike Authority. The directions for requesting the report may be found HERE.
  • Overland Park, Kansas (Johnson County) accident reports can be requested HERE, or in person  (12400 Foster, Kansas City, KS 66213).
  • Wyandotte County, Kansas report can be requested HERE under the "Online Services" tab.
  • Douglas County Sheriff crash reports can be requested HERE,  or in person (111 E. 11th Street, Lawrence Kansas 66044).
  • Lawrence City limits accident reports can be requested HERE.
Our office is available to answer your questions and help you through the process of requesting necessary reports. Call Attorney T. Morton today at 913.602.7288.
